The forms imitate Protocorinthian shapes and metal vases such as the Phoenicians brought from the east. For this reason and because of its wide distribution33 it is sometimes contended that at least the finest specimens were imported into Italy. The impasto ware whose local origin has never been questioned also drew on Greek models as soon as the period of importation began. The technique of bucchero is nearer the black impasto of Italy than any other fabric whose provenance is certainly known. It occurs in enormous quantities at the time when the Etruscans were at the height of their power, and they probably hastened its evolution by their knowledge of eastern methods and their heavy importations of Greek vases.34 Some of the rougher specimens would not be worth importing for their own sakes and are not of a shape to be used as containers.
